Cetinje

On the Ćipur rise, near the Cetinje Monastery, stands the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, known as the Ćipur Church. This site was originally chosen by Ivan Crnojević, who built a monastery here in 1484, moving the seat of the Metropolitanate of Zeta—making Ćipur one of Montenegro’s most historic locations. The current church was built in 1886 by order of King Nikola, on the foundations of the original. It houses the tombs of Ivan Crnojević and Queen Milena, and nearby are the remnants of the Crnojević palace and court. Ćipur is a powerful symbol of Montenegrin statehood, spirituality, and continuity—a meeting point of epochs, from medieval foundations to modern aspirations.
