Niksic Tour Guide
High above Nikšić, overlooking the vast valley, stands Bedem Fortress – the city’s oldest part and a lasting symbol of its historic soul. Also known as Onogošt, the fortress shares its name with the town’s medieval roots. Its origins date back to the 4th century, when the Romans built a military fort to control important inland routes across the Balkans. The fort was later expanded by the Byzantines, Slavs, and Ottomans, who turned it into a major defensive stronghold. It stretches 214 meters in length, with towers at both ends and an artillery platform at the center. Under Ottoman rule, Bedem was the heart of the local kasaba. After the liberation of Nikšić in 1877, its military function faded, but its symbolic importance only grew. Today, the restored fortress blends history with culture. Each summer, it hosts the Bedem Fest music festival, and throughout the year it draws visitors for its panoramic views and timeless charm. The stones no longer protect the city—but they still whisper tales of struggle, faith, and resilience.
