In the heart of Risan, the oldest town in the Bay of Kotor, lies a site that holds one of Montenegro’s most precious archaeological discoveries – Roman mosaics from the 2nd century AD. Found within a once-luxurious Roman urban villa, these mosaics speak of a refined lifestyle and artistic mastery. The highlight is a depiction of Hypnos, the god of sleep – the only one of its kind in the Balkans. The site preserves parts of the villa’s walls and original mosaic floors, now protected under a special canopy. It reflects Risan’s importance during Roman times as a thriving trade and cultural center.
