Full description
- Embark on the Komarnica Canyon adventure, paddling across Piva Lake to the confluence of the pristine and drinkable mountain river Komarnica. Piva Lake was formed in 1975 by the construction of the Mratinje Dam, which submerged an entire area and part of the Komarnica River Canyon that flows into the Piva River, renowned for its beauty comparable to the Tara River. Piva Lake is the largest artificial lake in Montenegro and the second largest overall, after Lake Skadar. Spanning 42km, it serves as the largest reservoir of drinking water in the Balkans. Our tour starts at the Gagović Brothers Bridge, locally more often called "the bridge at Đatlo" after a nearby cave. We paddle through the stunning canyon, a small remnant left after the flooding and formation of Piva Lake, as we head towards Komarnica, which remains largely free and wild. As we progress, the canyon narrows, with steep cliffs descending right to the water’s edge. We pass trees that, having emerged from the submerged canyon, have withstood the ravages of time for over 40 years. Surrounded by steep canyon cliffs, the unreal silence is only broken by the sound of paddles slicing through the turquoise blue water. At the confluence of Komarnica into the lake, we take a longer break for food and rest, with a boat provided for the return trip to the bridge where we started. At the end of the tour, delicious food awaits us at the “Izlazak” ethno village, on a beautiful terrace overlooking Piva Lake. Previous kayaking experience is desirable but not necessary. Before starting, instructors conduct a brief training session, and the kayaks used are stable and safe "sit on top" tandems, suitable for beginners. The tour is physically light to moderately demanding, and we adjust the pace to the readiness and wishes of all participants, taking multiple breaks for photography, swimming, and rest. The route length varies depending on the current water level in the lake, from 10-12km, which amounts to up to 3 hours of kayaking one way. The return cruise takes up to 2 hours. In case of adverse weather conditions on the water or other unforeseen reasons, the guide reserves the right to modify or shorten the route.
