Zabljak tour guide

Nine kilometers from Žabljak towards Nikšić, at an altitude of 1,411 meters, lies Devil’s Lake – one of Durmitor’s most mysterious glacial lakes. Its turquoise edges and deep blue center give it the appearance of a "mountain eye," as it's often called. The lake stretches 630 meters in length and 186 meters in width, with a maximum depth of 11 meters. The water is cold, but in summer it can reach up to 20°C, making it the warmest among Durmitor’s 18 lakes. However, swimming requires caution due to reeds and cold springs that can cause cramps. Legend has it that a fiery winged horse emerged from the lake, impregnated Duke Momčilo’s mare, and the resulting foal, Jabučilo, became renowned in folk songs. Another tale tells of a devil and his consort who, after the surrounding forest burned down, built a palace at the lake’s bottom and lured unsuspecting passersby into the depths. Today, Devil’s Lake is part of Durmitor National Park, cherished by anglers and hikers alike—a place where nature and myths coexist in silent harmony.
