Jasikovac Memorial – Echoes of History in Berane

The Jasikovac Memorial Complex is located on a forested hill above Berane, marking one of the most significant anti-fascist monuments in northeastern Montenegro. It was erected in 1975 to commemorate the mass execution of over 450 Yugoslav Partisans and civilians by occupying Axis forces during World War II. The site was used as an execution ground from 1941 to 1944. The monument, designed in the spirit of post-war memorial architecture, features a symbolic stone sculpture surrounded by memorial walls. Names of the victims are engraved in stone, along with historical inscriptions. Jasikovac was not chosen at random—the executions took place here in silence and isolation, far from the town. After the war, it became a place of collective mourning and remembrance. A local museum exhibition was later established near the site, contributing to educational and commemorative efforts. Today, the Jasikovac Memorial is part of the national register of cultural heritage and serves both as a historical marker and a quiet testament to the wartime suffering endured by this region.
