Church of Saint Peter – A Testament of Time

Gallery

n the upper part of Bijelo Polje stands the Church of Saint Peter, a monument of medieval spirituality and statehood. Built in 1196 by Prince Miroslav, brother of Stefan Nemanja, the church is one of the oldest preserved sacred buildings in Montenegro. Above the entrance, a stone inscription still testifies to its foundation. The church is linked to the creation of the famous Miroslav's Gospel, the oldest preserved Cyrillic manuscript in Serbian literature. In 1254, it became the seat of the Hum episcopate, and during the Ottoman period, it was converted into a mosque, suffering significant damage. After liberation in 1912, it was reconsecrated in 1923. Today, the Church of Saint Peter is a protected cultural monument, a place where history, faith, and art intertwine in stone and silence.
