Church of St. Michael the Archangel – Medieval Stone Witness

Gallery

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is one of the oldest preserved Orthodox churches in the Plav region. Located in the village of Brezojevice, just a few kilometers from the town, the church is believed to have been built in the late 15th or early 16th century. Constructed of local stone, with a semicircular apse and modest proportions, the church reflects the simplicity and endurance of medieval religious architecture in mountainous areas. Though the original frescoes have largely faded, remnants are still visible inside, offering rare insight into the artistic expression of the period. The church belonged to the Eparchy of Budimlja and Nikšić and served as an important religious center for the Orthodox population in the upper Lim valley. It has survived centuries of political and social upheaval and was several times damaged and repaired. Today, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel is protected as a cultural monument and remains in active liturgical use. It stands as a historical and architectural marker of the long-standing presence of Orthodox Christianity in this diverse border region.
