Stara Varoš – Shadows of the Orient in the Heart of Podgorica

Gallery

Stara Varoš is the oldest preserved part of Podgorica, developed during Ottoman rule from the 15th century. Nestled between the Ribnica and Morača rivers, it retains the spirit of the Orient through narrow alleyways, low houses with courtyards, and iconic examples of Islamic architecture. One of its highlights is the Starodoganjska Mosque, built in the late 15th century and among the oldest in Montenegro. Its walls hold precious manuscripts, including an illuminated copy of the Quran from the 18th century. Nearby stands the Clock Tower, erected in 1667 by Hadži-Pasha Osmanagić, a prominent city landmark. Stara Varoš also holds traces of everyday life – fountains, shops, remnants of defensive walls, and bridges like the Adži-Pasha Bridge. Though altered by time, this quarter still tells the story of Podgorica's past as a vibrant center of trade and culture on the Balkan crossroads.
