The Clock Tower – Timekeeper of Old Podgorica

Rising on the flat plateau of Stara Varoš, the Clock Tower is the only prominent Ottoman-era landmark that has withstood Podgorica’s turbulent history. It was built in 1754, likely by order of Hadži-Pasha Osmanagić, as a public timekeeping tower. The tower is square in shape, built of finely hewn stone, and topped with an octagonal cupola above a pavilion-style roof. A mechanical clock once stood at its peak, maintained over the decades by local craftsmen. At its base is a small fountain, and an Arabic inscription testifies to the time of its construction . Today, the Clock Tower is a protected cultural monument – a quiet guardian of an era when Podgorica moved to the rhythm of an oriental town. Its silhouette stands as a reminder that some symbols endure, preserving the city's identity.
