Sveti Stefan – From Fortress to Icon

Gallery

Perched on a rocky islet off Montenegro's coast, Sveti Stefan began as a 15th-century fortified village established by the Paštrovići clan. Legend holds it was built using treasure seized from Turkish ships during the 1539 siege of Kotor. Initially home to 12 families, it evolved into a thriving fishing community by the 19th century. In the 1950s, the Yugoslav government transformed the island into an exclusive hotel, attracting celebrities like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. In 2007, Aman Resorts leased the island, restoring its stone houses into a luxury resort while preserving its historic charm. Connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, Sveti Stefan remains a symbol of Montenegro's coastal allure, blending centuries of history with modern elegance.
