Husein Pasha’s Mosque – A Masterpiece of Ottoman Heritage

Gallery

In the heart of Pljevlja stands Husein Pasha’s Mosque, a pinnacle of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. Built in 1569 by Husein Pasha Boljanić, a local-born vizier, the mosque showcases a square base crowned with a central dome and four semi-domes. Its 42-meter-high minaret, reconstructed in 1912 after a lightning strike, is among the tallest in the region. Inside, the mosque houses a 16th-century handwritten Quran adorned with 352 miniatures and a unique 400-kilogram carpet woven in Egypt in 1573. Legend says 35 girls crafted it in a month. The mosque also preserves a revered relic: a hair from Prophet Muhammad’s beard. Recognized as a cultural monument of the first category since 1961, Husein Pasha’s Mosque is not just a place of worship but a living museum of Islamic art and devotion.
