Prokletije – the Wild Heart of the Balkans

In southeastern Montenegro, where the Dinaric Alps meet the borders of Albania and Kosovo, rise the Prokletije mountains, a massif of immense natural beauty and unspoiled wilderness. Since 2009, this area has been protected as a National Park, covering approximately 16,630 hectares. At the heart of the park stands Zla Kolata — the highest peak in Montenegro, reaching 2,534 meters. For decades, Prokletije have drawn hikers and adventurers with their dramatic terrain: sharp peaks, deep gorges, glacial lakes, and dense forests form a landscape of awe and wonder. The park is also a haven of biodiversity. It hosts more than 1,700 plant species, many of them endemic. Wildlife thrives as well, from brown bears and wolves to chamois and the elusive Balkan lynx. Prokletije are more than mountains, they are an experience. In their silence, one does not conquer the peaks, but learns to listen to the voice of nature.
