Tour guide of Herceg Novi
Located at the heart of Herceg Novi’s Old Town, on Belavista Square, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Construction began in 1883 and was completed in 1905, based on a design by architect Milan Karlovac. The church was consecrated in 1911. Built from finely carved Korčula stone, it follows the Greek cross plan, with arms of equal length. Its architecture uniquely combines Byzantine, Romanesque-Gothic, and Islamic elements, reflecting the multicultural heritage of the region. Inside, you'll find a white marble iconostasis made by master craftsman Pavle Bilinić from Split, and icons painted by Czech artist Franjo Cigler in the early 20th century. Surrounded by century-old palm trees, the church suffered damage during the 1979 earthquake but has since undergone several restorations, most recently in 2022. Today, this church is not just a place of worship—it is a cultural symbol and a treasured part of Herceg Novi’s historic identity.
