The Old Town of Herceg Novi, founded in 1382 by King Tvrtko I of Bosnia, serves as the historic core of the city. Originally named Sveti Stefan, it was later renamed Herceg Novi after Duke Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, under whose rule the town flourished.
