Tour guide of Herceg Novi

At the northern edge of Herceg Novi’s Old Town rises Kanli Kula – a fortress whose name in Turkish means “Bloody Tower.” Built in 1539 during Ottoman rule, it originally served as a fortification and later as a prison, which gave it its ominous name. Prisoners left behind engravings of ships on the walls, dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries – now a valuable historical record. When the Venetians took over Herceg Novi in 1687, they renovated the structure, giving it the form we see today. Positioned at 85 meters above sea level, Kanli Kula offers a stunning view of the town and the Bay of Kotor. Today, it serves as one of the most scenic summer amphitheaters on the Adriatic, with a capacity of over 1,000 seats. Since 1966, it has hosted numerous cultural events, including the Herceg Novi Film Festival, Guitar Art Summer Fest, and Operosa Montenegro Opera Festival. A visit to Kanli Kula is not just a step into history – it’s a unique experience where the past meets modern cultural life, overlooking the breathtaking bay.
