St. Nicholas Church – Faith at the Crossroads of Time

Located in the northern part of Kotor’s Old Town, between St. Luke’s Square and the city walls, the Eastern Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas stands as a dominant presence. It was built between 1902 and 1909 on the site of an earlier church destroyed by fire at the end of the 19th century. The church features a neo-Byzantine design, with a cruciform layout and a grand dome above the crossing. The main (south) façade is distinguished by a portal flanked by columns, a mosaic of the saint, and twin domed bell towers. Inside, a large iconostasis painted by Czech artist Ziegler is complemented by silver icon covers, oil-burning lamps, and candlesticks crafted by local artisans as votive gifts. Next to the church is the Treasury of the Serbian Orthodox Church, housing a collection of valuable icons, vestments, documents, and other items that reflect the spiritual and cultural identity of the Orthodox community in Kotor.
