Tour guide of Kotor
The Cathedral of St. Tryphon is the most significant medieval monument in Kotor. It was completed and consecrated in 1166, built on the site of an earlier church from 809 dedicated to the same saint – the city’s patron. The founder, a citizen named Andrea Saracenis, is mentioned in an inscription preserved in his sarcophagus. The cathedral is a three-nave basilica. The central nave is wider and higher than the side aisles, divided by columns with Corinthian capitals. A dome once rose above the crossing, and the vaults were decorated with paintings added over several centuries. Inside is a treasury filled with exceptional works of religious art, including relics of St. Tryphon and a baroque iconostasis. The columns, stone reliefs, and frescoes from different periods reveal the layers of the cathedral’s rich history . St. Tryphon’s Cathedral is not just a place of worship – it is a symbol of Kotor’s enduring devotion to its protector and a living monument to the city’s cultural legacy.
