Tour guide of Kotor

The Sea Gate, or West Gate, is the main entrance to Kotor’s Old Town. Built in the 16th century, during a period of frequent threats from land and sea, the gate faces the harbor and was for centuries the first impression for travelers and merchants arriving in the city. Architecturally, the Sea Gate features a Renaissance stone arch with the city’s coat of arms carved above. Important historical dates are etched into its façade – including 1944, marking the liberation of the town during World War II, giving the gate an added layer of symbolic meaning. Passing through, visitors arrive at the Square of Arms, the largest square in Kotor, surrounded by palaces, the clock tower, and the old arsenal. The Sea Gate is more than just an entrance – it is a historic threshold between the maritime world and the rich heritage of Kotor’s inner city.
