On the northern side of Stari Bar, beneath Mount Rumija, stands the Bar Aqueduct – the only preserved aqueduct in Montenegro and one of the most significant in the Balkans. Built in the 16th or 17th century during Ottoman rule, it served to bring water from a spring about 3 kilometers away to the fortress of Stari Bar. Constructed from roughly hewn stone, the aqueduct comprises 17 arches of varying widths, supported by 18 massive pillars. Atop these were stone pipes, each 12 cm in diameter and 30 cm long, forming the water channel. During the 1979 earthquake, the aqueduct was completely destroyed but was later restored and today once again serves its original purpose. This monumental structure stands as a testament to engineering prowess and the importance of water supply in the history of Stari Bar.
