Durmitor – A Mountain Wreath of Eternity

Gallery

Durmitor is not just a mountain—it is a symbol of Montenegro’s natural and cultural heritage. As the highest massif of the Dinaric Alps, with its peak Bobotov Kuk, Durmitor rises above dense forests, turquoise lakes, and deep canyons. Shaped by glaciers, the landscape holds 18 glacial lakes, known as “mountain eyes,” and over 40 peaks exceeding 2,000 meters. In 1952, Durmitor was declared a national park and in 1980, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Yet Durmitor is also home to people—herders, warriors, poets. For centuries, this region preserved its traditional architecture, customs, and the resilient spirit of Durmitor’s people, who endured both natural and historic challenges. Today, the mountain calls to new travelers: hikers, spelunkers, skiers, and all who seek silence in heights and timelessness in stone.
