Grčko groblje – Stone Witnesses of the Middle Ages

Gallery

On the plateau above Fish Lake, in the village of Novakovići near Žabljak, lies the necropolis Grčko groblje – one of the most significant medieval cemeteries in Montenegro. Covering an area of about 500 m², it contains 49 stećci: 10 slabs, 27 chests, and 12 gabled tombstones, mostly oriented east–west. Decorations on 22 monuments feature motifs such as arcades, spiral bands, twining vines, palmettes, rosettes, crescents, crosses, and hunting scenes. Notably, there are friezes with garlands and vine motifs with acanthus leaves. No inscriptions have been preserved. Although the name "Grčko groblje" suggests Greek origin, it is believed that "Greek" in this context is synonymous with "old." The necropolis was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016. Today, Grčko groblje stands as a silent witness to bygone eras, preserving stories of life, beliefs, and art of medieval communities.
