Zabljak tour guide

On the Jezera plateau near the village of Novakovići by Žabljak lies the necropolis Bare Žugića – one of the most significant medieval cemeteries in Montenegro. This necropolis comprises approximately 300 stećci: 240 slabs, 50 chests, and 10 gabled tombstones. Most are oriented east–west and arranged in orderly rows. Decorated stećci feature motifs such as braided wreaths, stylized crosses, arches with arrows, rosettes, crescents, swords, and shields. One of the most intriguing depicts a scene of a dance circle with a rider and a deer. In 2016, this necropolis was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with 27 similar sites in the region. Though exposed to the elements, the stećci continue to stand as silent witnesses of bygone eras, preserving stories of life, beliefs, and art of medieval communities.
